Although the movement is gone, rock ‘n roll is still with us…

pirate radioWrapping up yet another productive evening watching “Pirate Radio” with Hap & Harry’s by my side. The music in this movie is what really gets me. Although I was not alive during the era of rock and roll, I can still feel through the treads of the moment, the spirit is still alive, sweeping through the 21st century. Even though we have moved on to other tunes and sing other songs, that feeling of rebellion, release and living on the edge is still there. It takes me back to my high-school days shredding it on my electric blue Schecter with the sounds of the full band encompassing all. It takes me back to college, sitting in music business class listening to tracks that went back as far as the beginning of recorded sound, when real talent was king.

Music sings a tune in my life quite unlike any other, even those moments of silence must be punctuated with sound.

What are some of your favorite good vibrations?

We’ve heard it before the definition of insanity:

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” – Albert Einstein

However this does not simply mean one action, one project, or even one life lesson. Why do children tend to make the same mistakes their parent made, why do the same cycles of life repeat themselves, faltering on war and peace? Why haven’t we learned from history? The broad ideas of equality, consumerism and ethics tend to repeat themselves throughout generations in different forms. Why are the few who step forward to voice new direction and new thoughts challenged and voted down? Are we afraid of change? Are we frightened of the responsibility of thinking outside the box and creating drastic change?

What if we faced our fears. What if we fought to hold ourselves accountable to our internally high standards. What if we stepped forward to encourage others to take be creatives, to go again the norm, to fight for change that breaks the cycle?

It may be lonely at the top, but thinking outside of the box will change your life. If something isn’t working for you, whether a business idea, project, relationship or homework assignment, it might just be you who needs to change your thinking and go for the unexpected.

What positive choices have you made that changed your life?

There is something magical about tickling lights in the dark. They serve as a friendly reminder of home, of warmth in front of the fire, a hot cup of team and a blanket to snuggle under. There is something in the beauty of light that captivates us, which is why the “Lights” art exhibit at Cheekwood was an incredible experience.

Life is not about comparing your path to others, or letting others judge you based on your dreams. It’s your life and your path is different from any others, don’t let stipulations or what others think stop you from going against the grain and taking your own journey.

Unknown to us there seem to be rules that apply to life. Who came up with them? No one knows but there are certain expectations passed from generation to generation.

  • Go to school
  • Stay trendy
  • Date
  • Graduate high-school
  • Go to a good college
  • Party hard
  • Graduate college
  • Find a good job
  • Get promoted
  • Find your soul mate
  • Get married
  • Have kids
  • Do something incredible so that you will be remembered after you die

Who came up with these rules and is it necessary to follow them? There are reasons why individuals are created unique, we each look different! Yet we struggle to maintain status, to look the same, think the same,  and experience the same feelings. Although there may be certain expectations others expect us to live up to, as unique individuals there is no need. Your life is your life for a reason, go with the unexpected, make change happen and, in the words of an icon:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” – Steve Jobs

Nashville has its on unique landscapes, events and beauty. One of the places I was fortune to visit was Traveler’s Rest for their Crawfish Boil and Beer. The landscape is absolutely gorgeous and the New Orleans food and beer incredible. One our way there we drove under various tunnels:

The landscape on the historic plantation was beautiful:

My meal of crawfish were extremely lively:

The thing about music, the reason it captivates us and pulls us over the brink of no return is because of those songs that truly get you. As with any romantic relationship there is no way to fully explain the way the one you love makes you feel, so it is with music. In particular one brilliant artist will write and release a song that holds my very being captive. The way the lyrics flow and the music blends together moves me. The rhythm thudding deep within my soul, the wail of the guitar telling its story, the music sways as I sway, understands my underlying emotions, holds me close, makes me dance, pushes me onward to new horizons, it “gets” me.

I listen to music all the time, writing, reading, driving, partying but the music I tend to love the most is when I’m in my car driving. Music Loud. Windows down.

Links to a few of the songs I’ve been listening to recently are listed below. I’d love to hear what yours are too, feel free to comment with links to your favorites.

Muse, Supremacy

Kopecky Family Band, My Way

Muse, Animal

The Killers – Flesh And Bone (Jacques Lu Cont Remix)

Music best listened to through the loud speakers

Dark of night, cold of winter, biting through the thin black dress

Rushing forward, high heels clicking, running towards the light

Doors spill open, pouring music, light and warmth into our minds

The beat is throbbing, bodies moving, thriving, jiving with the vibe

Drinks held high, fists are pumping, voices raised in songs

Lights are flashing, blue, green, purple, dancing on the mob

Cold dissipates, heat takes over, we sway, we sing, we shout

Sweaty brows, chests heaving, the time ticks tocks towards morn

Tried feet limp, in heels, in shoes, danced until threadbare

We weave the crowd by way of friends, we hug, we kiss, we leave

Disclaimer: I am not a poet but I enjoy blending words
