The Comparison Game – Who Makes the Rules?

Posted on: June 4, 2013

Life is not about comparing your path to others, or letting others judge you based on your dreams. It’s your life and your path is different from any others, don’t let stipulations or what others think stop you from going against the grain and taking your own journey.

Unknown to us there seem to be rules that apply to life. Who came up with them? No one knows but there are certain expectations passed from generation to generation.

  • Go to school
  • Stay trendy
  • Date
  • Graduate high-school
  • Go to a good college
  • Party hard
  • Graduate college
  • Find a good job
  • Get promoted
  • Find your soul mate
  • Get married
  • Have kids
  • Do something incredible so that you will be remembered after you die

Who came up with these rules and is it necessary to follow them? There are reasons why individuals are created unique, we each look different! Yet we struggle to maintain status, to look the same, think the same,  and experience the same feelings. Although there may be certain expectations others expect us to live up to, as unique individuals there is no need. Your life is your life for a reason, go with the unexpected, make change happen and, in the words of an icon:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” – Steve Jobs

I think one reason we work so hard to follow the “rules” is that it’s tough to look different, to stand out. In finding your own path you will make mistakes and get stuck from time to time. People are often too quick to judge and criticize. Even people who are truly caring can unintentionally discourage you from going your own way by getting you to follow their advice. It takes a lot of courage and determination to find your path and stay on it. Not an easy road but a truly fulfilling one.
